MALATA DVD N996 Firmware Upgrade Instructions
This upgrade fixes glitches involving hanging during
movies . the only known glitch that still exists after the upgrade is that
Nubian subtitles do not appear during Star Wars. This apparently is a flaw
with the Mediamatics chip.. So if you must know what they are saying you
will have to turn on the subtitles. If you are learning to speak Nubian in
preparation for a vacation on Tatooine, this may be a problem, To most people, this should however not
be
PLEASE NOTE THIS UPGRADE MAY REQUIRE SOME SOLDERING IF YOU
ARE NOT SKILLED AT FINE ELECTRICAL SOLDERING TAKE THIS TO A SHOP TO HAVE
THIS PERFORMED BY A PROFESSIONAL. Please do not call for assistance. If
you do not fully understand these instructions, you should not be
attempting it Take it to a professional.

NOTE SOME MACHINES WILL NOT REQUIRE THE SOLDER LINK CHANGE
TO ACCEPT UPGRADE . THERE IS NO WAY TO TELL IF YOUR UNIT IS IN UPGRADE
POSITION. ATTEMPT SECTION ONE, IF IT FAILS TO ACCEPT UPGRADE ,
PROCEED TO SECTION TWO UPGRADE INSTRUCTIONS SECTION

ADAPTEC USERS: Download Adaptec image file located here
NON ADAPTEC USERS. See bottom of page

USING A CDR NOT CDRW : Create Cd
from disc image
-
INSERT CD IN DVD PLAYER . SCREEN WILL READ
" FIRMWARE UPGRADE"

Press Up arrow on machine face or
remote. Screen goes blank for up to 3 minutes. DO NOT POWER DOWN

IF
After 5 minutes nothing happens , remove disc and proceed
to Section 2

Welcome screen appears, firmware upgrade writing
comes up again , remove upgrade disc, press and hold pause
button, firmware date should read " Nov 9th 2001 " If
date does not read Nov 9th, Proceed to section 2

Machine is now in Chinese: Press
Setup , ok, ok, down, ok Screen will change to
English

Reset all your preferences to suit your home
theater setup

IMPROPER UPGRADES WILL VOID

REPEAT : IMPROPER

MACHINE BEFORE REMOVING COVER!!!!! Tools
required: Low power solder pencil ( 15 to 20 watt maximum), Phillips screw
driver, "Solder sucker", small quantity of solder, magnifying glass Total
Time: Less then 15 minutes

UNPLUG DVD PLAYER
-
Remove 7 cover screws
-
Using soldering iron and "solder
sucker" remove solder link from R7
- ( refer to image below) Ensure link is open !!!

Solder closed connections across R8 .
This now makes the machine firmware
upgradeable.

Close cover , WARNING
Lasers emit invisible light which may cause eye damage. plug in machine, PERFORM
UPGRADE AS PER SECTION ONE

After upgrade is complete , Unplug machine,
remove cover, Desolder links across R8 , resolder link at R7
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU CLOSE THE R7 link

Close cover , Plug in machine, You are done,
